Leukemia Cell
Perhaps one of the most feared of all cancer types is cell acute leukemia in which there is an abnormal multiplication or reproduction cells, specifically the white blood cells. Leukemia is a cancer of the blood or bone marrow that has currently several categories and is a leading cause of death worldwide. There are two main classifications of leukemia: the acute and chronic. There are also several types of leukemia like hairy cell leukemia,
Classifications of Leukemia
Acute leukemia is a type of leukemia that needs immediate cell leukemia treatment. This is a type of the disease in which there is rapid reproduction of immature blood cells. These malignant cells will increase in number until it spills into the bloodstream and the other organs of the body.
Chronic leukemia, on the other hand, is characterized by rapid reproduction of blood cells that are relatively mature. However, these white blood cells are still abnormal. The good thing is that chronic leukemia does not need immediate treatment. It can be monitored for quite some time or observed before therapy is recommended.
Sub-classifications of Leukemia
Other than the two major categories, there are sub-divisions of leukemia called cell lymphocytic leukemia and myelogenous leukemia. The former has something to do with degradation of cells that are responsible for the immune system; the latter causes abnormalities in the red blood cells. Combined, you will have four major types of leukemia: acute lymphocytic leukemia, acute, myelogenous leukemia, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and chronic myelogenous leukemia.
The damage to the bone marrow is brought about by over reproduction of immature white blood cells. These immature white blood cells overpower the mature ones and this causes abnormalities in functionalities of the immune system. With the lack of mature white blood cells, the body will not be able to fight pathogens tat enter it. As a result, the body will not be able to fight even a simple infection and this will lead to further complication. Common symptoms are dyspnea, anemia, fatigue, flu-like symptoms, enlarged liver and spleen, weight loss, and lack of appetite.
In the entire history of the disease, there is no known exact cause of leukemia. Accordingly, the different types of the disease also have different causes. According to many scientists, tobacco smoking or chewing can cause or contribute to leukemia. Maternal transmission is also being looked at as a cause.
Leukemia has a treatment, so there is hope. Leukemia stem cell is a popular treatment nowadays in which
Fresh bone marrow cells are planted to the bone to promote the growth and production of healthy and mature white blood cells. Other forms of treatment are chemotherapy and bone marrow transplant. Others will recommend radiation therapy and induction chemotherapy. Adults will have a different treatment from children as the drugs may not be suitable to young ages. For high risk patients that have already relapsed, the most common form of treatment is allogenic bone marrow transplantation.
